On behalf of the American Society of Head and Neck Radiology, I invite you to attend our 39th Annual Meeting to be held in San Francisco, California, from Wednesday September 21st through Sunday September 25th, 2005. Registrants will be eligible to earn over 25 hours of Category I CME credits from the leading experts in head and neck imaging in North America.

The opening session on Wednesday, September 21 will focus on imaging of ENT emergencies. Clinical scenarios including the swollen neck, epistaxis and airway compromise will be covered. The presentations will emphasize the most relevant imaging findings as well as basic anatomic principles. Facial, orbital and temporal bone trauma will also be discussed. Those of you who interpret the majority of your ENT images on evenings and weekends will find this session particularly valuable!!

The morning session on Thursday, September 22, will be devoted to PET/CT imaging. PET/CT has truly moved into the mainstream of head and neck radiology with both academic and private centers scrambling to meet the demands of our referring physicians.

An experienced group of head and neck imagers will discuss staging new cases of squamous cell carcinoma, the use of PET/CT in detecting or excluding recurrent squamous cell carcinoma and the role of PET/CT in other malignancies affecting the head and neck. Basic principles of scanning, including patient preparation, normal variants and appropriate use of scanner hardware and software will also be covered.

An update on new PET/CT agents will precede the ASHNR Scientific Paper Session. A copy of the Call for Abstracts for the 2005 meeting will be available in PDF format after February 15, 2005.

The Thursday afternoon session will be devoted to lumps and swellings in the neck. Imaging of nodal, non-nodal and congenital neck masses will be discussed in detail. The session will also include a review of pathology of the parotid, submandibular and thyroid glands, as well as the complex anatomy of the cervicothoracic junction.

Friday, September 23 will begin with a focus session on practice management in head and neck imaging. The impact of multirow detector CT on all phases of study performance, from patient scheduling to distributing images to your referring clinicians, will be addressed. An update on billing and coding issues specific to our field will also be provided. Whether you practice at a teaching hospital or a freestanding imaging center, you're sure to gain valuable insights in this rarely discussed aspect of head and neck imaging.

Two highlights of every ASHNR meeting, the expert film panel and the luncheon honoring our gold medalist for 2005, will take place on Friday. Sessions on temporal bone imaging and cranial nerve imaging will follow the luncheon. ASHNR members should note that the annual business meeting is scheduled for Friday afternoon.

Sessions on Saturday morning will be devoted to imaging of the orbits and paranasal sinuses. The meeting will conclude on Sunday, September 25th with a final focus session on Sectional Imaging in Head and Neck malignancies. This session was a highlight for our attendees at the 2002 meeting in Cleveland; I'm certain it will be equally valuable for our registrants this year.

No ASHNR meeting would be complete without a special event on Saturday night. This year, our gala evening will be held at a venue truly representative of San Francisco--the recently remodeled Asian Art Museum. Located within walking distance of our host hotel, the Museum holds one of the most comprehensive collections of Asian art in the world, ranging from tiny jades to monumental sculptures both stone and bronze. Ancient and contemporary from India, Persia, Southeast Asia, Tibet China, Japan and Korea are all represented. Attendees will have full access to the permanent galleries, housed in the city's former main library, a 1917 Beaux Arts-style building recognized as one of San Francisco's most important historic structures.

In response to the attendees of our 2003 meeting, the program schedule will allow registrants time to enjoy the special delights that San Francisco offers. Bill Dillon, head of the local arrangements committee, assures me that late September is an ideal time to visit San Francisco. Daytime temperatures average in the low to mid '70s, providing an ideal opportunity to enjoy Golden Gate Park, Fisherman's Wharf or any one of the city's eclectic neighborhoods-- from Chinatown to Castro Street.

Our host hotel, the Renaissance Parc 55, is located within two blocks from Union Square--the heart of the City's fashionable shopping district--as well as a terminus or San Francisco's fabled cable cars. Only a few steps away from the hotel is the Powell Street Station on the city's famed Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system. Cost-conscious attendees should note that BART operates directly to San Francisco Airport (SFO) and by a shuttle system to the Oakland Airport (OAK).

Be sure to mark your calendars now for what will be a truly memorable meeting in a fabulous city. Our streamlined online registration process will open February 15, 2005. Just click on “Register for the 2005 meeting” after February 15.

I look forward to seeing you all there.

President-Elect and Program Chair
